Sinn Fein Councillors Leeanne McEvoy and Cathy Mason have raised serious concerns about speeding in the Kilcoo area and have also launched a petition to demand Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PSCP) to urgently put in place speed restrictions for the area.

Councillor McEvoy said: “There is an increasing concern among residents in the area about traffic speeding through Kilcoo that will result in someone being seriously injured unless corrective action is immediately taken.

“Commuters are using the village as a thoroughfare to and from Newry with little or no consideration being shown to the local community.

“Possibly the most concerning aspect is that the local school crossing patrol uses this main route twice a day, I would dread to think what the consequences might be if action isn’t taken.

“I have put in a case for and requested a Speed Indicator Device for the area to try and reduce the speed of commuters passing through Kilcoo.”xa0

Speaking after a visit to Kilcoo Cllr Cathy Mason added: “At a recent site meeting in the village where myself and Cllr McEvoy engaged with the local GAA club and concerned residents, the issue of speeding was one of the main concernsxa0raised.xa0

“We have started a petition calling on the PCSP to immediately introduce speed restrictions before someone is killed or seriously injured. We would call on all local residents in Kilcoo to get behind this and sign the petition.”
