Coade Welcomes Green Initiatives For Newry

Coade Welcomes Green Initiatives For Newry But Says More Needed Across The Constituency writes Kevin McAteer.

Newry and Armagh Alliance representative Jackie Coade has welcomed proposals for environmentally sustainable initiatives for Newry City such as in the Albert Basin but has stated that it doesn’t go nearly far enough as such initiatives need to be constituency wide.

Ms Coade said that the Department of Infrastructure and Minister Nicola Mallon, who has recently appointed a cycling and walking champion, has been working closely with Newry Mourne and Down District Council. This relationship has resulted in possible plans for ‘green’ initiatives within Newry City.

Jackie Coade, Alliance representative in the
Newry and Armagh constituency, has supported
the principle of environmentally improved
areas in and around Newry and Armagh.

Said added: “I fully support any plans for ‘green’ initiatives within Newry City. It is important that we try to promote the reducing of our carbon footprint within Newry.

“Environmentally-friendly projects help promote the health and wellbeing of the public. It improves mental and physical health and can also boost the local economy. It is important that we work together with both Newry Mourne and Down District Council as well as Armagh Banbridge and Craigavon Council.”

At the moment there are no plans confirmed but with several projects within Belfast and Derry announced immediately there is a lot of potential within Newry and Armagh constituency to promote environmentally-friendly, green initiatives.

Ms Coade added: “Newry and Armagh is full of potential for all things green. One such project is the Albert Basin Park Project, the Greenway project, the Towpath linking Newry and Portadown and Slieve Gullion and Gosford forest parks to name but a few.

“It is very important that any future plans for environmentally-friendly initiatives in Newry need to have consideration for the wider population of Newry and Armagh.”
