Sean Hollywood Arts Centre Hosts Exciting May Programme.
The month starts with the launch of a new art exhibition by established local artists Mary Doran and David Johnston on Friday 3 May at 8pm. Mary and David have taken inspiration from the Irish landscape to produce a series of stunning artworks. Mary uses oils and bitumen, producing a diverse body of figurative work, while David works in various styles and materials, using a wide variety of techniques to evoke the viewer’s emotions.
The Sean Hollywood Arts Centre has programmed a varied range of exciting exhibitions and performances for May.
The exhibition is free of charge and will run until 28 May. On the same evening at 8.30pm, Mary will also take to the stage for a free concert with her blues and rock band, The Old Crow Express.
On Wednesday 15 May it is the turn of jazz guitar expert Mike Nielsen, who regularly wows audiences with his innovative performance style and musical improvisation.
Not forgetting our theatre audience, we have succeeded in persuading the internationally renowned actor Mikel Murfi back to the Sean Hollywood Arts Centre on Friday 10 May with another opportunity to see the superb ‘The Man in the Woman’s Shoes’ and the sequel, ‘I Hear You and Rejoice’ on Saturday 11 May. Performances start at 8pm. Both plays are written by Mikel Murfi who also stars in the productions. Tickets are £12/£10, with tickets for both shows available at £20/£16.
We also welcome the ‘phenomenon’ that is Ivan Little in Marble Productions’ ‘The Professor and the Factory’. Written by Michael Ievers, and starring Kilkeel-born actor Jason Nugent, this will be performed on Friday 17 May at 8pm.
This thought-provoking play set in Belfast during the early years of The Troubles is based on a true story about the fortunes of a failing shirt factory that was transformed by the arrival of a professor from Queens University. With the women of the shirt factory breaching the barricades of the Ulster Workers Council strike of 1974, this is their story. Tickets are £12 and available from: www.marbleproductions.co.uk, or from the Arts Centre box office.
Newry Mourne and Down District Council Chairman, Councillor Mark Murnin said: “What a great line up for Spring – exhibitions, music, laughter and tears, but all events well worth coming out for. The new Spring Summer brochure is available now at our arts centres, Council buildings, and museums.”
