Don’t Miss I Am Maura At The Down Arts Centre

I Am Maura.

Down Arts Centre on Saturday 11th May 2019.

2005. Maura is 15 and trying to find a boyfriend. Only she’s surrounded by girls and is starting to think she might actually prefer them. Asking questions in school means awkward blushes and detention. Her only guidance is Martine McCutcheon’s ‘Perfect Moment’ and her best mate Ali.

I Am Maura is a light-hearted and deft look at the life changing decisions we all face in our teenage years and how we’re woefully ill-equipped to deal with them.

“Following on from our sell-out production, That Scottish Play! Commedia of Errors Theatre Company bring this brand-new show to the stage. In this one woman play, audiences will encounter over a dozen characters, each defined by physicality and vocal nuances.

Using direct address, storytelling and truthful dialogue, I Am Maura places the audience at the centre of this pivotal week in Maura’s life. The production is a multi-role, physical comedy and features physical characterisation, mime and singing.

The show embraces the pop-culture of Martine McCutcheon, Destiny’s Child and the life-changing invention of social media. It will appeal and inspire, whilst carefully exploring how we handle the education of young people by putting them in the care of institutions that would be better suited to the 19th century.

Clare McMahon was one of Fishamble Theatre Company’s Play for Ireland writers and her debut play ‘Shakespeare’s Women‘ sold out The Lyric and toured NI. Her acting credits include the West End, MAC and the BBC’s Woman in White.

I Am Maura is directed and produced by Benjamin Gould – director of sell-out That Scottish Play! at The Lyric and who directed smash-hit Woman Troubles at the CQAF last year. Set and costume are designed by Stuart Marshall, a design graduate of the University of Ulster. He works both as a designer and a scenic artist, and his work has been seen across Ireland, the UK, the United States, Australia and the Far East.
