Chase Away the January Blues with Music and Drama.
A varied season of live performances sure to chase away those January blues, gets underway at the Down Arts Centre.
Kicking off the programme, on Friday 18 January, is Ronnie Greer and his powerhouse band who make a welcome return to the Centre.
With his distinctive guitar style, Ronnie has been at the centre of the Irish blues scene for over 40 years sharing the stage with some of the best blues musicians in the history of music. Ronnie Greer & Band promises to be a great night of blues, roots and a little jazz based music, played with style and conviction by some of the very finest musicians in the country.
If drama is more your style, then Kabosh Theatre Company’s new play, ‘The Box’, written by Carlo Gȇbler might just be the ticket for you. Coming to Down Arts Centre on Saturday 19 January, the play tells the fascinating true story of Co Down nurse Olive Swanzy during her service in World War I. While caring for those on the front line, Olive kept autograph books documenting her time and those she encountered.
For years these books lay hidden in a box in an attic in Rostrevor. When they were finally unearthed they revealed poems, jokes, comments, cartoons and sketches, all done by wounded soldiers in Olive’s care. Along with her own beautiful paintings, these books tell a fascinating story of the very real people who lived during extraordinary times.
Watch as The Box comes to life and tells the story of the men and women who placed their thoughts, hopes and dreams in the care of Olive’s autograph books.
