Staff and students from South Eastern Regional College (SERC) recently attended the two-day Skills NI Show at the Titanic Exhibition Centre in Belfast and engaged with thousands of young people from across the province to showcase the range of vocational education courses on offer.
Skills NI is an interactive and inspiring show aimed at 14-19-year olds as well as teachers, parents and other influencers that help young people decide how to achieve the career of their dreams.
This year saw exhibitors from education providers as well as potential future employers including Almac, Armed Forces, Galgorm Resort and Spa, Housing Executive and Northern Ireland Electricity Networks.
SERC students and staff from the School of Engineering and Computing and the School of Performing and Creative Arts showcased their subject areas and skills to the amazement of those in attendance.
The engineering team demonstrated a range of specialist skills and techniques such as robotics, virtual welding and 3D printing. While the computing team showcased their computing skills through virtual reality, app development and games development.
Hairdressing students demonstrated a range of hair styling techniques and methods for the young people to try.
Theatrical, Special Effects, Hair and Media Make-Up students also demonstrated their fabulous makeup techniques.
SERC won the ‘Best Variety’ award at the show for their diverse range of demonstrations on display at the high-profile event, beating off stiff competition from the private sector and other Further and Higher Education providers.
SERC Director of Curriculum and Information Services Michael Malone said: “To win this award is testament to the high level of teaching and learning that goes on within the College, the diversity of our subject areas and skill set of our students. For many school pupils they could ultimately benefit from attending SERC and I would encourage them to consider SERC as a first option.”
