Giants Defeat Dundee On Opening Night
The Stena Line Belfast Giants won on opening night at The SSE Arena with a 4-1 victory over the Dundee Stars inxa0Friday’sxa0Challenge Cup clash writes Mark Brooks.
Goals from Shields, Vandermeer, Johner and Swindlehurst and a stellar performance in net from Stephen Murphy kept up the Giants 100% record in Challenge Cup Group B.
Giants Dominate First Period In Home Opener.
Colin Shields broke the deadlock on opening night when he squeezed the puck home, picking up a rebound from Paul Swindlehurst’s effort after only 63 seconds.
Jim Vandermeer doubled the hosts lead atxa018:16xa0with a nice unassisted finish from the wing.
40 seconds later and Dustin Johner extended the Giants lead once again, unassisted, when he skated the puck into the Stars zone after winning the puck back while the hosts were shorthanded.

Stars Get Back Into Cup Tie.

The Stars pulled one back in the middle period when Francois Bouchard netted on the powerplay, assisted by Shawn Boutin, at 34:36.
Giants Complete Home Win.
Paul Swindlehurst rounded off the Giants scoring atxa04:25xa0into the final period, assisted byxa0Francis Beauvillier and Dustin Johner, to ensure a third win from three games in the 2018/19 season.
