McGrath Attends All Party Meeting On Mesh Issue

South Down SDLP MLA Colin McGrath has attended an All Party Grouping to discuss the mesh issue.

The Assembly Member said: “Whilst this is primarily an issue for women, it was discussed that some men with hernia operations have been left in a similar scenario. So let’s hope that some positive progress can be made.

“This very important matter was raised by the All Party Group and a decision was made to approach the Permanent Secretary of the Department for Health to discuss the implementation of the ban in Scotland and Australia to see if any lessons can be learned.

“The biggest concern is that mesh treatment has been used for nearly 20 years now and there is genuine worry that there isn’t the skill base to revert back to the old procedure. However, the experience from Scotland and Australia should help this.”
