South Down SDLP MLA Colin McGrath has spoken out as Councillors are consulted about a proposed reduction in speed limit from 40mph to 30mph along the Drumnaconagher Road in the vicinity of Holy Family Primary School in Teconnaught.
Colin mcGrath said: “I have been contacted by parents on an ongoing basis regarding traffic flow in the vicinity of Holy Family Primary School.
“I fully welcome the proposal to reduce the speed limit from 40mph to 30mph and would ask that this be brought forward as soon as possible.
“However, I also want to flag up the need for a formalised one-way system. A one-way system would make traffic at this location much more manageable and would greatly improve road safety in general for pupils, parents and staff.”
Slieve Croob Councillor Mark Murnin added: “Parents at the school already operate an unofficial one-way system and this works extremely well. But if someone new comes along on the road and they aren’t aware. xa0It causes chaos so we are simply asking Transport NI to adopt and formally introduce a system that is already working well on the ground.”
Local parent Melanie Douglas said: “This has been an issue for quite some time now and I am delighted that the SDLP have raised it. We want an environment that is safe for our children as well as being efficient in terms of dropping off and picking up.”
