Mournes Sinn Féin Councillor Willie Clarke has raised the need for safety improvements to be made at the Twelve Arches Newcastle.
Councillor Clarke said: “I have been contacted by a number of concerned residents in Newcastle requesting I make representation on their behalf to DFI Roads for the installation of pedestrian crossing warning signage on the above road at Old Road junction,known locally as the Twelve Arches.
“Newly Mourne and Down District Council have a car park facility on Old Road opposite a pedestrian footway access to Murlough Nature Reserve and the Murlough Blue flag Beach,this is a major local attraction for familys,casual walkers, dog walkers, older citizens and citizens with disabilities.
“People are crossing the A2, a derestricted road at this point, on a sweeping bend, I believe minimum safety measures such as pedestrian warning signs need to be installed on each approach, this would greatly alert drivers to the possible hazard ahead.”
