Get Set For The Ards Half Marathon

The Ards Half Marathon and Walk celebrates its tenth year on Friday 30 June 2017 and runners and walkers across Ards and North Down are being encouraged to pick up their pace and get training for the race.

Organised by Ards and North Down Borough Council, the 13.1 mile run and 9 mile walk encompasses the infamous Scrabo Hill, providing a challenge for even the most proficient athletes.

A generous prize fund of almost £3000, with a top prize of £400 for the first male and £400 for the first female runner to complete the race, is available.

Having taken part in the Marathon since it started in 2007, Sarah Benton from Bangor is looking forward to marking her tenth race.xa0 She commented:xa0“I find it hard to believe that I will have done all ten races; I’m really excited! The race is always very well organised making it a pleasure to take part in.”

Graham McGowan from Newtownards ran his first ever half marathon when the race began.xa0 He too will be completing his tenth race this year and xa0added:xa0“It is good running round your own town… xa0seeing people you know gives an extra impetus to keep going!”

Mayor of Ards and North Down, Alderman Deborah Girvan, said:xa0“The Ards Half Marathon and Walk is always popular, with up to 1,000 runners and walkers typically taking part each year.xa0 The race traditionally attracts our local top runners as well as international competitors and this year was no exception, with some participants coming from as far afield as Ontario, Canada.”

David Seaton, Chairman of Athletics Northern Ireland, added:xa0“Always well organised, and with generous prizes for both male and female competitors, the Ards Half Marathon and Walk appeals to both club runners and joggers alike.xa0 I am sure the 2017 race will attract plenty of support from previous competitors, plus those interested in taking on Scrabo Hill for the first time!”
