Clarke Calls For Liofa Funding Rethink By Givan

liofaMourne’s Sinn Féin Councillor has said the Minister for Communities Paul Givan should immediately restore £50k of bursaries to the Líofa initiative.

He added: “This decision by the DUP Minister Paul Givan to remove £50k bursaries from the Líofa initiative shows further disregard for the Irish language. This is a further example of the DUP’s bigoted mindset, towards Irish culture Minister Givan who is certainly not a minister for the Irish speaking community.

“Since it was set up by my party colleague Carál Ní Chuilín, Líofa has been hugely successful and has helped thousands of people learn and improve their Irish. These people are from every political, religious, social and cultural background.

“This funding needs to be reinstated, I am aware of many families who have benefited from the bursary, which encourages students to undertake learning during their summer holidays in the Donegal Gaeltacht. xa0These are the type of positive initiatives that government should be encouraging our young people to be involved in.”
