Mayor Welcomes Ballygowan Gas Connection

Over 1,200 properties in the Ballygowan area will soon be able to enjoy the benefits of natural gas.

Mayor of Ards and North Down, Alderman Deborah Girvan, today welcomed the news that over 1,200 properties in Ballygowan will be able to connect to the natural gas network in early 2017, with over 600 properties already connected, enabling home owners to enjoy the wide range of benefits of natural gas this winter.

Since announcing a major expansion project worth £60 million earlier this year, Phoenix Natural Gas has been working to extend the gas pipeline and bring natural gas to a further 13 towns across the county, connecting 28,000 homes and businesses over the next few years.

Ballygowan is the first town to have this work complete and have natural gas available for homes and businesses in the area. Additional towns set to benefit from natural gas include Annahilt, Ballynahinch, Castlewellan, Crossgar, Downpatrick, Dromore, Drumaness, Dundrum, Hillsborough, Newcastle, Saintfield and Spa.

Mayor of Ards and North Down, Alderman Deborah Girvan, welcomed the news, and said: “I am delighted to hear that natural gas is now available in Ballygowan and that home and business owners have the choice to install natural gas.

“This has been a highly anticipated project for County Down and the fact that Ballygowan is now connected to the network is great news for the local area. Not only will people be able to enjoy the obvious benefits of natural gas such as instant heat and a constant supply of hot water, but the town will also benefit from an additional new utility, making Ballygowan an increasingly attractive area to live and work.”

Jonathan Martindale, Business Development Manager for Phoenix Natural Gas, said: “After 20 years in Northern Ireland, Phoenix Natural Gas has built its network and established natural gas as the fuel of choice for home owners in Greater Belfast.

“We have been overwhelmed with the response we have had from Ballygowan to date, from the high number of residents who came to see us at our information centre in Ballygowan, to the more recent enquiries we have received as a result of natural gas now being available.

“I would also like to thank the Ballygowan community for their continued patience and cooperation as we develop the natural gas network in the area. Phoenix Natural Gas is committed to working with the local community to deliver an efficient programme of works with minimal disruption and we look forward to continuing to work in partnership with the people of Ballygowan.”
