An Exhibition of Drawings by local Artist Damian Magee will be on show from 2 to 29 November, in The Carroll Gallery, Sean Hollywood Arts Centre Newry.
Damian said: “For a time decontextualised and meticulously rendered drawing became central to my practice in my attempts to grasp transient, mutable and ineffable relationships with the material world.”
This exhibition brings together various groups of drawings developed over a number of years, with subject matters ranging from archaeological artefacts to everyday socks. This project explores the ways in which we relate to objects and the social, cultural and material values usually ascribed to them. In his work, there is a particular emphasis on the fragile relationship between natural and manmade forms as well as the influence of landscape, history, time and memory on the mutability of identity.
Damian graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine and Applied Art from the University of Ulster in 1998 and took Foundation Studies in Fine art And Design in Lurgan Technical College. Since then, Damien has been the recipient of travel and arts awards from the Arts Council of NI, and acquired a residency at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre and Ballinglen Arts Foundation. Damian Magee has had many successful solo shows and his work forms part of the public collections of Galway City University Hospital, Dundalk District Council, Lurgan Technical College and other corporate and private collections.
Newry Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Gillian Fitzpatrick said” ”Damian’s work is thought provoking and exhibited in such a way that it challenges our perceptions of everyday objects, and well worth a visit”.
