Mourne’s Sinn Féin Councillors Willie Clarke and Sean Doran have welcomed the decision by Traffic NI to set out slow road markings on the A2 Newcastle to Kilkeel Road at the Bloody Bridge car park location.
Cllr Clarke said:xa0″While these road markings are to be welcome they do not go far enough and I will be writing again to the Minister of Infrastructure Chris Hazzard to request a site meeting at the Bloody Bridge car park to discuss joint proposals with him and Council officials.
“We have major concerns about pedestrian safety at Bloody Bridge carpark which is in the ownership of Newry Mourne and Down Council. It is a very busy site and the car park is well used by activity groups and walkers accessing the Mournes.
“To enter the High Mourne’s pedestrians have to cross the busy A2 Newcastle to Kilkeel Road, and it is essential that further Road safety measures are installed before there is a loss of life.”
Cllr Doran said: xa0″The carpark regularly overflows and cars are then parked on the road verge and footpath. This is a dangerous situation for pedestrians using the site and for motorist as large vehicles would be down to single file traffic, a meeting with the minister is required to find solutions, to these Road safety issues.”
