Councillor Willie Clarke has welcomed the recent listing of the Newcastle Rock Pool.

Councillor Clarke said: “Both the built heritage and the social importance of the facility must be recognised. The proposed listing will ensure the Rock Pool continues to provide a valuable resource for people to enjoy swimming in a sea water environment with added safety. It also trains many young people in life-saving skills and has to be protected.”

Cllr Clarke addd: “As a person who is from the Harbour area in Newcastle, I understand how valuable this community asset is to the people. While the listing will enhance the preservation of the built heritage and acknowledge the contribution it has made to the heritage of Newcastle Harbour area, since being opened to the public in June 1933.

“The Rock Pool is in need of a major restoration. However, there has been a limited amount of spend on the infrastructure, and this is another example of the disgraceful legacy of neglect at the Harbour area left by the former Down District Council. This area has been allowed to fall into a state of disrepair and was not a priority with Down District Council. Hopefully this will now change in the new Newry Mourne and Down District Council.”
