Councillor Willie Clarke has praised residents on the Castlewellan Road estates in Newcastle for their work in setting out planters and boxes to brighten up the area.xa0

Mournes Sinn Féin Councillor Willie Clarke has commended the efforts of the community in designing and filling planters for estates on the Castlewellan Road, Newcastle.

He said: “I would like to pay tribute to the hard work of residents and young people, who have been working on an inter-generational project, setting up and displaying colourful planters along the road this summer.

“The planting scheme has been a huge success, bringing lots of partners together to improve the appearance of this area. It is fantastic that the local youth were to the forefront in making the planters up,The initiative is being supported by other agencies such as the PSNI, Newry Mourne and Down District Council, YMCA, Youth Service, County Down Rural Community Network, Ark Community Gardens and Castlewellan Road Community Groups who are all working in partnership to deliver the programme.

“This community initiative has to be commended, for generating energy and instilling community spirit for the local estates on the Castlewellan Road.The project has improved the appearance of the area and has encouraged the community to work together and create a better environment for all of the citizens.”
