Following the release of a poll which suggests growing support for a move to leave the EU, the SDLP MP Margaret Ritchie has warned of the potential consequences it would have on the local harbour industry.

Ms Ritchie said: “It is crucial for the future of Warrenpoint Harbour, and for Northern Ireland, that we retain membership of the EU.

“Warrenpoint Harbour is the main of point of contact of delivery and receipt of goods from the Republic of Ireland. 46% of the trade currently at the harbour is with the south.

“At present, due to membership of the EU, this business is made easier as there are no tariffs implemented on trade. Leaving the EU would undoubtedly change this.

“It is vital that Northern Ireland votes to remain in the EU. Membership of the European Union is crucial to our local economy, foreign direct investment and to sustain growth. I would encourage everyone to use their democratic vote and to vote to remain in the EU on the 23rd of June,” xa0added Ms Ritchie.
