Re-Appointments To The NIFHA

Fisheries Minister Michelle O’Neill has re-appointed Helen Henderson, Martin McDonald and Dr George McIroy to the local NI Fishery Harbour Authority (NIFHA).

The Authority has a statutory responsibility for improving, managing and maintaining the three fishery harbours and harbour estates of Ardglass, Kilkeel, and Portavogie and for operating the facilities which are provided at these harbours.

These re-appointments will be effective from 1 May 2016 and will be for a further four year period.

NIFHA is a statutory body established in 1973 under the Harbours Act (NI) 1970 and the Fishery Harbour Authority Order (NI) 1973.

Helen Henderson is from Limavady and is the Chief Executive of St Columb’s Park House Peace and Reconciliation Centre. She has spent most of her working life in the community / voluntary sector and holds a Masters’ degree in Business Studies. Helen is a Board Member of Children in Crossfire and is passionate about sustainable development, equality and global justice.

George McIlroy is a previous Chief Executive of the Agri-food and Biosciences Institute and a previous Chief Scientific Officer and Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer in DARD. He has a wide experience of committee work at Board level in the Private and Public sectors. George lives in Belfast and is a Trustee of the National Museums NI, an Independent Member of the TB (Tuberculosi) Strategic Partnership Group and a Board Member of the Western Health and Social Services Trust.

Martin McDonald is from Newry. He began his career as a town planner and later worked for The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. He retired in 2011 from a post as Chief Executive Officer of the NI Rural Development Council. Martin is currently a Board Member of Newry Credit Union; he is also Interim Chair of The NI Heritage Lottery Fund.
