The Downpatrick Area Suicide Prevention Taskgroup has been launched at the Downpatrick Social Enterprise Hub writes Pat McGreevy.
The group has drawn together representatives from local community, voluntary and statutory organisations to provide a focus for suicide prevention efforts in the Downpatrick area.
Records of suicide deaths in recent years indicate that, on average, seven people die by suicide every year in the Downpatrick area.
Taskgroup members believe that with collective will and activity they can raise awareness of the help that is available to people in distress; improve the response for people at risk of suicide; and enhance the care provided to those who have survived a suicide attempt and for those who have lost a loved one to suicide.
The ultimate aim of the Taskgroup is to save the lives of those who, for whatever reason, feel that their only option is suicide.
Pat McGreevy, the current Chair of the group, said: “I am so very grateful to all those who have attended the launch and all those who have made it such a success. The level of cooperation and collaboration amongst group members in organising the launch is a strong indication of the commitment to suicide prevention in our area.”
The Taskgroup have commenced their activities by organising a two-day ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) workshop. The two-day workshop will take place at Downpatrick Presbyterian Church, Fountain Street on 14-15 April. The workshop is open to anyone in a caring role.
