Alliance Councillor Calls For Improved Road Safety At Chapeltown Junction

Recent housing development in Chapeltown hamlet has prompted calls by a local councilor for better road safety in the area.

Alliance Councillor Patrick Brown has highlighted the issue of cars travelling at 60mph along the Strangford road through the hamlet, despite its increased residential development.

He said: “I have been contacted by several constituents who are concerned that more must be done to ensure road safety in the Chapeltown hamlet. There are three junctions along this small stretch of narrow road which are spread along two sharp blindspot bends in the road.

“The fact that cars can drive through at 60mph currently beggars belief, and I fear with increased development in the area we will see an increased risk of road accidents in this otherwise quiet part of the district.

“:I have written to Regional Development Minister Michelle McIlveen and raised this issue and recommended that a 40mph sign is installed on either side of Chapeltown hamlet, as a minimum attempt to improve road safety in the area.

“More slow signs should also be placed along the Strangford road prior to entering Chapeltown”.
