South Down MP Margaret Ritchie is pursuing NI Water for a replacement pumping station on the Strangford Road in Downpatrick.
Margaret Ritchie said: “I have been contacted by a number of constituents living on the Strangford Road who have been affected by flooding due to the inefficient pumping station.
“Further to representations to Northern Ireland Water, I have been advised although there are no current plans to upgrade the sewer network in the area, NI Water has a project in the Capital Works programme to upgrade the existing Waste Water Pumping Station on the Strangford Road in Downpatrick.
“This project is at an early stage in the appraisal process.
“It is my understanding the appraisal will be complete in Summer 2016. At this stage a business case will go forward to seek funding to proceed to detailed design, tender and construction.
“I have renewed my representations to ensure this appraisal is carried out without delay. While it is welcome news that an upgrade of the pumping station is in the pipeline, works need to be carried out as a matter of urgency to allow residents peaceful enjoyment of homes, and for the safety of motorist during periods of heavy rainfall.”
