There are currently around 19 part-time firemen in Downpatrick who man two fire appliances and they respond to calls from their pagers.

Mr Hazzard said:xa0“I was alarmed to learn that Downpatrick has been identified as one of four major towns currently without full-time fire cover, despite having been identified as having a higher risk by Fire and Rescue Services.

“I was also alarmed to hear that the NI Fire and Rescue Service is not considered a frontline service.

“The NI Fire and Rescue service is being called upon now more than ever as they respond to issues such as flooding and road traffic accidents as well as fire cover, so it is crucial that Downpatrick has a full-time Fire and Rescue Service.

“Early intervention is key to saving lives is stating the obvious. I met with Stephen Boyd, the regional Secretary of the Fire Brigades Union, and he has identified how facilities in Downpatrick need to be upgraded to allow for these changes to happen.

“I am committed to not only supporting but improving the Fire and Rescue Services in Downpatrick in every way I can, while ensuring it is not at the expense of neighbouring towns such as Ballynahinch and Newcastle.
