Shannon Welcomes Speed Limit Change At Teal Rocks In Portaferry

Strangford MP Jim Shannon has welcomed the decision by DRD Minister Michelle McIlveen to review the request for a speed limit extension from the flood gate beyond McClement’s garage on the Portaferry Road, Newtownards.

dn_screenHe said: “This has caused great concern over the last four years. There have been two minor accidents at the entrance to Teal Rocks and a fatality at the corner by the garage.
“The 13,000 vehicles that use this road each day converge on the entrance to Teal Rocks back to back and residents feel like they are playing Russian roulette in going to work or school each day.

“Health and safety is absolutely paramount and the residents of Teal Rocks and the daily commuters who use this stretch of road want to see the speed limit reduced.

“The Minister has agreed that a review is needed and the offered to have an accurate survey undertaken of the speed of traffic and volume of traffic throughout the day and night on this stretch of road.

“In the meantime I urge motorists to be careful wherever they are driving and especially so on this stretch of road particularly in the current difficult road conditions.”
