South Down MLA Chris Hazzard (Sinn Féin)  has called for TransportNI officials to give serious consideration to investing in substantive resurfacing of the main Ardglass Road from Downpatrick to the coastal village.
Mr Hazzard said:Â “I have asked TransportNI to look seriously at investing in a resurfacing scheme for this busy road.
“From Downpatrick to Ardglass the surface is extremely uneven in places and both road edges are badly crazed in various locations.
“With the onset of winter these defaults in the road surface can make for quite dangerous driving conditions.
“I accept that tight budgets are a reality for TransportNI but road safety should be prioritised and I think the people of Lecale would agree that this particular need should be met as a matter of urgency.
“There is considerable heavy traffic on the road which includes buses, delivery vehicles and heavy lorries for the fishing industry and the road surface is badly worn making the wear and tare of tyres a significant concern for all motorists, many of whom commute to Belfast and other centres to work.”
