McGrath Condemns Attack on 80-Year Old In Downpatrick Burglary

A lady in her eighties has been burgled in a heartless attack in Roughal Park in Downpatrick in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Newry Mourne and Down District Councillor Colin McGrath,xa0SDLP Group Leader,xa0said: “this morning’s burglary on a vulnerable elderly lady was a despicable act”.

dn_screenHe added: “The vulnerable in our area will feel a little more vulnerable today as a result of this despicable act.

“This was a petty theft and resulted in an elderly lady being attacked in her own home. We must do all we can to protect our community but especially our elderly and vulnerable. ” I would appeal for anyone with information to contact the PSNI immediately so those who committed this act are caught and dealt with by the courts.”

Detectives in Downpatrick are investigating a burglary in Roughal Park close to the Belfast roundabout during the early hours of Saturday morning, 21 November.

A woman in her eighties was awoken by a noise at around 1.45 am and discovered two males inside her home.

Detective xa0Constable Megaw, Downpatrick Reactive and Organised Crime unit, said: “The men made the householder accompany them while they searched the house before makingxa0off with a small quantity of medication and a watch.xa0The lady was not injured.

“One of the burglars is described asxa0between 5’ 6” – 5’ 8” tall, of a slim/medium build with slight dark growth around face. He was wearing a white coloured anorak with the hood pulled up and dark blue track bottoms possibly with a red stripe on leg. The second was alsoxa0between 5’6” – 5.8” tall, small build, wearing a dark coloured anorak with the hood pulled up and dark bottoms. Both are believed to have been in their late teens or early twenties.”

Constable Megaw added that detectives are keen to hear from witnesses or anyone with information and added that they are especially keen to speak to anyone who may have seen a dark coloured pick-up truck, possibly used by the burglars, in the area.
