South Down MLA Chris Hazzard (Sinn Féin) has expressed his concern about the the number of unfinished housing developments across South Down as “an issue that needs to tackled as a matter of urgency”.

He added: “During the economic collapse many construction companies went into liquidation and communities have been left with unfinished housing developments. Very often they are eyesores and often attract anti-social behaviour.

“A fund is needed to help restart housing developments that have slowed down or stalled, such as the Builders Finance Fund, which is currently accepting applications in England.

“Such a fund would be a major boost for our local Construction industry, which for many years was the backbone of the economy in South Down.

“I have written to the Social Development Minister Mervyn Storey to ask if there are plans to offer a similar initiative here for local builders.”
