Fionnuala McKinley launched her solo exhibition of works in The Sean Hollywood Arts Centre Newry, at 7.30 p.m. on Friday 4th September.
When Fionnuala had to retire from working as a health visitor and family therapist in the health Service, due to ill health, she returned to her youth. When she was ill her mother kept her occupied in bed by buying off-cuts of Irish Linen in Newry market which Fionnuala would embroider, being taught intricate stitches by her mother.
Both her mother and father gave her a life-long interest in flowers. She now photographs, paints and embroiders 3-D flowers and also recreates flowers in Carrickmacross lace. Today she uses both traditional and contemporary techniques in producing intricate, vibrant, unique pieces.
As Fionnuala had a lifetime interest in colour and fashion, she enjoys taking one-dimensional pictures and turning them into 3 dimensional textiles, hence the Floozies.
The Floozies are all amply proportioned celebrating the beauty of women’s curves.xa0Fionnuala also spins wool and silk, which she then weaves and often incorporates into her work.
In recognising Fionnuala’s solo show in Newry, Chairperson of Council, Chairperson Naomi Bailie said:xa0“The range of skills exhibited from embroidery, photography and through to painting, will inspire those practicing the same crafts throughout Newry, Mourne and Down, and provide a visual feast to all who view it.”
Fionnuala will be exhibiting over 20 pieces in this exhibition which can be viewed in The Bell Gallery until 29 September.
