Independent Councillor Patrick Clarke has welcomed proposals drafted by Transport NI for a traffic calming scheme to improve road safety and reduce speed along the Ballylough Road in Annsborough village.
The scheme which is currently being considered for inclusion in Transport NI ‘Traffic Calming Programme’ is now out to consultation with the relevant statutory bodies such as the PSNI, Ambulance Service, NI Fires Service, Translink, and Newry Mourne and Down District Council. Local residents will also be notified during the consultation process.
Councillor Clarke who has been campaigning for proper traffic calming measures had also previously met with Transport NI and the PSNI on the Ballylough Road in August 2014 following a young girl being knocked down.
“I very much welcome that Traffic and Network Development Unit of Transport NI have now drafted up proposals for a traffic calming scheme along the Ballylough Road in Annsborough village which is now out to statutory and public consultation.
“The proposed traffic calming scheme includes five speed cushions and two separate speed humps along the Ballylough Road within the 30mph speed limit zone, plus five additional speed hump warning signs on the Ballylough Road, Mill Hill and Ardnabannon Road.
“Quite clearly there is a need for a traffic calming scheme along this busy road part of the Ballylough Road in Annsborough village to improve road safety and reduce the speed of drivers into Annsborough.
“Due to the Ballylough Road being situated near a number of residential developments a local primary school and shop and post office it is absolutely imperative that a traffic calming scheme is implemented to safeguard pedestrians and to reduce speed along the busy Ballylough Road.
“There have been numerous accidents over the years including a young girl being knocked down in 2014 so I am very pleased that Transport NI have now started the consultation process regarding a proposed traffic calming scheme along the Ballylough road in Annsborough,” said Councillor Clarke.
