‘We are inviting anyone aged 18 and over who enjoys singing or who would like to give it a try to join us for a couple of hours and see what we get up to. The Singers’ Circle has been going for over ten years now and it’s very informal and good fun. You don’t need to be able to read music as all the songs are taught by ear and we do a wide variety of songs – from world folk to pop music. We do a lot of harmony singing and there is enough variety to suit everyone from the beginner to the more experienced singer.”
Laura explained that the ethos of the class is inclusive and based on Natural Voice principles derived from the Natural Voice Practitioners Network (NVPN). There is no audition to join the group or pressure to sing solo though there are opportunities for people to do some solo singing if the spirit moves them.
Laura added: “So often people tell me how they were discouraged from singing at school where they were told they ‘couldn’t sing’ or to stand at the back and mime, but the motto I use in my classes and workshops is a Zimbabwean proverb – ‘If you can walk you can dance, if you can talk you can sing‘.
“Only a very few people – 3 or 4 in 100 – have a bit of difficulty distinguishing pitch (amusia) so that means the odds are well stacked in your favour and you’ll find if you join us that any fears you may have about singing are soon overcome. As one of our members put it to me ‘ I wish I had found you all sooner!’
“Singing is not the preserve of ‘professionals’ – it is everyone’s birthright and there is a wealth of research that proves how much it improves health and wellbeing.’
The session starts at 7.30pm and finishes at 9.30pm and is open to anyone aged 18 and over.
