Sinn Féin Councillor Willie Clarke speaking after the recent Newry Mourne and Down District Council meeting where he proposed a consultation be carried out with users and key stakeholders of Islands Park, Newcastle, xa0said: “I am pleased the proposal was supported unanimously, the council will now arrange an event, to discuss how the public envisage how the park is to be improved, the Islands Park is an extremely popular amenity, used by locals and tourists alike.”

Cllr Clarke added: “The Council have taken the decision to lease the ‘Pitch and Putt’ area to a private business which is providing ‘Football Golf’ this initiative will be reviewed in a year, I feel that the public and users need to have an input into decisions that aim to enhance the area.

“I have my own ideas on how the open space is used, including an outdoor adventure play facility, which would have a number of pieces of play equipment installed throughout the park, the creation of a series of new permeable pathways and the establishment of a healthy living area, consisting of herb gardens and fruit orchards, the creation of an animal theme wood sculpture trail, increasing the wildflower area and a general improvement of the biodiversity of the area.”

“ The Council have undertaken the design of a master plan for the Castle Park and Islands Park, these proposals will transform Newcastle and significantly increase visitor numbers.

“However, it is essential that local people have an input into these development plans which will shape the future of this important recreation area”, said Cllr Clarke.
