Mourne’s Councillor Willie Clarke (Sinn Féin) is calling for support from the community to stop the misuse of life saving equipment along the Shimna and Burren River, inxa0the Islands Park, Newcastle.

Cllr Clarke said: xa0“The damage or theft of throw lines has been a recent problem and needs nipped in the bud. I would appeal to the people who are involved in this dangerous activity, to be aware that tampering with this equipment could result in the loss of life.

“These throw lines are purposefully placed along riverbanks of the Islands Park, for use in the case of an emergency. An absent or damaged throw line compromises the chance of a successful rescue and puts people’s lives at risk.

They are in place as vital safety equipment, the removal or destruction of them is intolerable and cannot continue. I appeal to any members of the public who witness such irresponsible behaviour to report it to the PSNI and Newry, Mourne and Down District Council immediately,” added Cllr Willie Clarke.
