A teenager has lost his life following a tragic history of drug addiction.
Ards Councillor Richard Smart said: “Like many in my home town of Newtownards, the news that such a young man has died due to suspected legal highs is shocking and distressing.
“The 17-year old was a Regent House pupil. Adam Owens’ body was found yesterday in the Westwinds Estate, Newtownards, and he was pronounced dead shortly after.
‘I am informed that despite the support of his parents the Adam Owens had struggled with this addiction for 2-3 years but did not receive suitable help to fight the addiction as he was under eighteen.
‘This tragedy highlights a failure in every tier of our government.
‘I have contacted the Minister for Justice David Ford to highlight how the failure to make some of these substances illegal effectively ties the hands of the PSNI behind their back.
‘My party colleague and MLA for Strangford Mike Nesbitt is seeking clarity from Minister for Health Jim Wells on what support is available for young people who need treatment for addictions, seeking better treatment for those in the grip of these dreadful substances.
‘I cannot imagine the pain and grief this family must be going through at present but send my heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the family circle. This tragedy must now be a catalyst for change. I want no more of our young people to end their precious life in this tragic way,” Â added Cllr Smart.]]>
