South Down MP Margaret Ritchie (SDLP) has said that global nuclear complications add weight to the argument against the British Government’s flawed approach to pursuing more plants.
She said: “Today’s news about a fresh leak of highly radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan is yet more evidence that nuclear power poses significant safety issues and must not be rushed into.
“Yet the British Government continues to press ahead with their plans for investment in new power plants. This comes after serious safety issues were raised about the decommissioning of Sellafield following the discovery of large cracks in pools containing radioactive material.
“It is imperative that the British Government rethinks its plan to rush in to invest in new nuclear plants. Residents on the east coast of Ireland know more than most the dangers posed by poor management of nuclear facilities. The lessons of the past must be learned,”  added Ms Ritchie.
