Sinn Féin MP’s Conor Murphy, Pat Doherty and Michelle Gildernew and will be in Leinster House today (Thursday) for the Oireachtas Good Friday Agreement Committee meeting at which the A5 road and Narrow Water bridge projects will be on the Agenda for discussion.
Speaking before travelling to Dublin, Conor Murphy said: “I welcome the fact that these two significant projects – the Narrow Water Bridge and the A5 are on the agenda of the Oireachtas Committee. It will afford us the opportunity to press the Minister on assurances given by the Irish government at the recent Stormont House negotiations.
“The Narrow Water Bridge and A5 are hugely important infrastructure projects that will provide much needed jobs for regions of the country starved of economic investment for generations.
“Their construction will give a significant boost to the local economy and open up the Newry, Mourne and Louth district and the region from Monaghan to Derry/Donegal to both commercial investment and tourism potential. Every effort must be made to ensure that both these projects are progressed with the utmost urgency.”
Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams said after the meeting: “During the Stormont House negotiations at Christmas, I raised the Narrow Water Bridge with the Irish government representatives. As a result the government made a renewed commitment to the project.
“This morning Conor Murphy raised the A5 and Narrow Water Bridge with Minister Donohoe. The Newry/Armagh MP specifically asked that the Irish government row in behind the efforts of Louth County Council to secure EU funding as part of the cocktail of funding needed to finance the project.”
