Shannon Comments On TTIP And The Poultry Industry

dn_screenStrangford MP Jim Shannon MP speaking after a Westminster debate said: xa0“Given the public attention that food safety has received in recent years, I am not surprised that the British Poultry Council (BPC) have expressed some serious concerns about the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership between the EU and US could undermine food safety.

“This is because the preparation of poultry in the US undergoes different treatments, in fact banned treatments than that in the EU. We need to reassure the BPC and members of the public that food safety standards will not be weakened by the TTIP as well as ensuring that therexa0xa0xa0will be no job losses in Northern Ireland which employ 6000 in this sector. Across the Ards there are a large number working in this sector as well and they need reassurance.”

There is wide debate going on across the EU in varying sectors on how TTIP will affect them. It may well be that when the EU decides finally that there will be some winners and losers across the board. For example, there are fears that private health care could encroach in the NHS and efforts are being made to create a protocol to leave health out of the TTIP agreement – if and when it emerges.
