He said: “Blair Mayne became one of the best known figures of the Second World War and SAS for his unwavering courage, determination and ferocious strength. Blair Mayne was a fantastic leader and role model for younger men with many of them looking up to him and seeing him as an almost indestructible figure.
“Of course this was not the case in the end, but his gallantry and courage throughout the war was truly impressive and it is unsurprising that the men looked at him in the way that they did – he was a true leader, a true warrior and a true hero.
“It was myself at the Assembly and at Westminster that called for a posthumous Victoria Cross to be awarded to Blair Mayne. Unfortunately this hasn’t happened yet but it is something that I will continue to battle for both here and in Westminster.”
