Down District Councillor Stephen Burns (Sinn Féin)xa0has put a motion to Council demanding that the new Bunker Hill facility be made wheelchair friendly. These works are an addition to the already popular new attraction, and include a new wheelchair friendly entrance and a disabled parking space.

dn_screenHe said the motion is a direct result of a very positive engagement with the local community to discuss how to get the best from new facility.

Speaking after the event the Sinn Fein Councillor said: “Council have a legal requirement to ensure that their facilities are disability friendly. I intend to make them honour that responsibility in regards to Bunkers Hill.

“The new facility is a wonderful addition, and the people of Castlewellan are extremely happy to have it. The views are the simply stunning. But there are also concerns about dog fouling and litter, and I’ve requested new bins to keep the area tidy.

“It was also suggested at the meeting that a ‘Friends of Bunkers Hill’ group could be constituted.

“This is an initiative that I fully support. There are many additions that could be incorporated into the new facility, including bird tables, wild flowers, a wetland habitat and planting of indigenous trees.

“It’s hoped the new group would attract support from throughout the community, including the local primary schools, youth club and intergenerational grouping,” added Cllr Burns.
