Department Publishes Higher Education Statistics

dn_screenThe Department for Employment and Learning has published the following statistical bulletin: Destinations of Leavers from UK Higher Education Institutions: Northern Ireland analysis 2012/13.

NI domiciled students from UK Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).

* xa0Six months after leaving, 56% of NI domiciled full-time leavers were in full-time work, 14% in part-time work, 3% primarily in work and also studying and 3% primarily studying and also in work – a total of 77% in some sort of employment.

* xa0The employment rate of NI domiciled full-time leavers varied depending on subject area studied. The rate was highest for those who studied Veterinary Sciences (96%) and Medicine & Dentistry (95%) and lowest for those who studied Physical Sciences (59%) and Mathematical Sciences (55%). However, it is worth noting that 30% of leavers from Physical Sciences and 37% from Mathematical Sciences were engaged in full-time study.

* xa0Most NI domiciled leavers in employment who studied in Great Britain (GB) did not return to NI to work. Only 38% of NI domiciled full-time leavers from GB HEIs in employment were employed in NI. The comparable figure for NI domiciled leavers from NI HEIs is 88%.

* xa0The average salary of NI domiciled full-time leavers in full-time employment was £20,215 in 2012/13, with a median of £20,000.

Students from NI HEIs

* xa0Six months after leaving, 53% of full-time leavers from NI HEIs were in full-time work, 15% were in part-time work, 4% primarily in work and also studying and 3% primarily studying and also in work – a total of 76% in some sort of employment.

* xa0The unemployment rate of full-time leavers from NI HEIs varied depending on subject area. The rate was highest for those who studied Mass Communications and documentation and Creative Arts & Design (13%) and lowest for Medicine & Dentistry leavers (0%).

* xa088% of NI domiciled full-time leavers from NI HEIs in employment were employed in NI, whereas non NI domiciled leavers from NI HEIs are more likely to leave NI to work with only 30% of full-time leavers, employed in NI.

* xa0The average salary of full-time leavers from NI HEIs in full-time employment was £19,835 in 2012/13, with a median of £20,000.
