Local Police Step Up On Road Safety Operations

Police officers in Downpatrick carried out proactive traffic operations over the weekend as part of our focus on road safety.

dn_screenA number of drivers were detected speeding and local officers are now reminding everyone to take care when out on the roads.

Sergeant John McKenna, Downpatrick Neighbourhood Policing Team, explained: “Road safety is of paramount importance to us and our aim is to save lives and reduce injuries.

“While the vast majority of right thinking people realise that speeding and other offences such as drink driving are unacceptable, clearly there is still an irresponsible minority who ignore all advice and warnings.

“If you speed, take drink or drugs and drive, fail to wear your seatbelt, drive carelessly or dangerously, you run the real risk of killing or seriously injuring yourself, your passengers or some other innocent road user.

“We want to get the message out to local drivers that they need to take more care on the roads if everyone is to reach their destination, and return home safely. One death is one too many and road safety remains, and will continue to remain, a priority for local police.”
