THE Lecale branch of the SDLP attended their recent annual Youth Conference in Belfast.
Margaret Ritchie MP, Councillor Gareth Sharvin and SDLP branch member Peter Canavan gathered for the conference which was held in St.Paul’s on the Falls Road, West Belfast.
Speaking at the conference Councillor Sharvin said: “It is important to get young people engaged in politics. The conference gives a platform to inform our young people of the effects politics will have on their lives.”
The focus of the conference was to highlight the need of re-engaging young people in politics and opening up the debate of how we go about that. Is Social Media the answer or do we go to local GAA clubs or Scout Clubs to engage with young people.Councillor Sharvin believes it involves all methods openly available.
He added: “One of my aims while on the Council, is to get more young people involved in politics. Getting them talking about what matters to them and what us politicians could be doing for them. I want this to be across all parties and all topics, may it be ranging from unemployment to sports facilities in the district.”
