To celebrate Voluntary Arts Week (9-18 May) there will be a free taster session open to all singers in the district taking place at Down Arts Centre this coming evening (Wednesday 14 May) from 7.30-9.30pm.
Tutor Laura Plummer said: ‘This is a great opportunity for anyone who enjoys group singing to just drop in and join in with the Singers’ Circle at Down Arts Centre. The Circle has been going for almost ten years now and it’s a nice informal way to sing with other people. From time to time we offer free taster sessions to encourage people to give it a try. There is no pressure – everyone sings together, you don’t need to read music as all songs are taught by ear and we do a wide range of material. At the moment we are singing some pop songs from the 70’s/80’s and also some shanties and songs of the sea. We also do a lot of songs from various countries – from Africa to New Zealand.
“Many members of the Singers’ Circle go on to join Downpatrick community choir Voices of Lecale and perform in a variety of venues. The choir has also released three CD’s and just last month performed at The MAC in Belfast in David Greig’s acclaimed play ‘The Events‘.”
Laura added: “Many people who come to the Singers’ Circle tell me they’re sorry they didn’t know about it sooner. I’d say to anyone who is interested but just a wee bit uncertain – go for it! The class is so friendly and you have nothing to lose! And especially to all the male singers out there – whether you’re an Elvis or a Pavarotti or the next Christy Moore – we’d love to have you with us.”
