Design A Medal Competition For School Children in Ards

Who deserves a medal? There are just two weeks left for local young people to enter Ards Borough Council’s art competition to design a medal for the person they think most deserves it. dn_screenPart of the Council’s series of centenary commemorative events to mark the start of the First World War, the competition has been inspired by the more than 300,000 awards for service or gallantry which were presented by Britain in the course of the First World War. The Mayor of Ards, Councillor Stephen McIlveen, is asking parents and teachers to encourage local young people to participate. He said: “There is still time to get involved in this inspirational project, which is intended to engage with younger people to raise awareness of just how significant the role and the sacrifice of those who served in the First World War was.

“I am asking local parents and teachers to encourage young people to take part in this competition, and to use it as a chance to remember all those who served during the war, as well as those people in our community who give of themselves on a daily basis working in fields such as medicine, policing and the voluntary sector.” The three best entries will have their designs created into an actual bronze medal, custom made by a local artist that will be awarded to the winners for them to keep for years to come. A selection of entries will also be displayed in Ards Arts Centre’s Sunburst Gallery in June 2014. The competition is open to children and young people 4-18 years, who either live or attend school in the Ards Borough.  Each entry must be A4 size and should clearly say who the medal is for and why – this can be anyone from a famous person or someone in the family.
