Ritchie Questions PM On Sale Of Sellafield Plutonium To Other Countries

SDLP MP for South Down Margaret Ritchie has called on the UK Prime Minister to reconsider the controversial sale and transport of plutonium from Sellafield to other countries.

dn_screenSpeaking after a statement from the British Prime Minister on the recent Nuclear Safety Summitxa0Ms Ritchie stated:xa0“President Obama used the nuclear safety conference to raise genuine fears over nuclear terrorism, and the sale and subsequent transfer of nuclear material across the globe from Sellafield increases this danger. “I have urged the Prime Minister to revisit this matter and reconsider this policy. He agreed that nuclear safety was of paramount importance but stopped short of giving a commitment to reconsider the transfer of material from Sellafield.

“I will continue to pursue this matter in Parliament. The threat from accidental or intentional nuclear disasters will always remain while the UK government is wedded to this dangerous and expensive technology. The north of Ireland will stay in the shadow of this threat until there is a radical re-think from the government,” xa0added Ms Ritchie.
