New Memorial To Be Unveiled In Comber

A new memorial, commemorating all those who have lost their lives in the armed forces since the Second World War, is to be dedicated in Comber next week. The name of Corporal Channing Day from Comber, who was killed in Afghanistan in October 2012, will be included on the monument which has been commissioned by Ards Borough Council and will stand in the town’s square.xa0 Members of the Council will be joined for the ceremony by representatives of the armed forces, including those who served with Corporal Day, the Day family and regional and local representatives of the Royal British Legion. Speaking ahead of the dedication, Mayor of Ards, Councillor Stephen McIlveen, said:xa0“With this memorial we pay tribute to all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in conflicts since the end of the Second World War. Its creation also ensures that Corporal Channing Day, whose loss in Afghanistan in 2012 was felt so deeply here in her home town and further afield, is remembered in a most fitting way. The stone stands as a permanent reminder of the human cost of war and its direct impact on local communities”. The dedication and unveiling of the memorial takes place on Saturday 29^thxa0March at 11am in Comber Square.
