Councillor Willie Clarke Condemns Maghera Security Alert

“It is my understanding that a weapon was recovered during this alert and that obviously increases security concerns in the wider area. “This incident occurred close to a primary school and that again heightens worries for everyone in the community. I want to welcome that this weapon has now been taken out of circulation and I will be engaging with the PSNI on this matter seeking an update on a possible motive for this taking place.” A police spokesperson said: “Police in Newcastle have recovered a firearm in the Dundrinne Road area.xa0Police were in the area on routine patrol on Friday 7 March when they discovered a shotgun wrapped in a black bin bag in hedgerow.xa0Army Technical Officers were tasked and the item was removed for further examination. Inspector Mark Peters said: “We are carrying out a number of follow up enquiries in relation to this incident. It beggars belief that someone would leave a gun lying in a hedge and put local people at risk. The fact local officers discovered the shotgun and removed it means this community is now safer. “Anyone with information is asked to contact local police on 0845 600 800.
