Shortly before 3:45am on Friday 28 February, thieves used a Volvo digger to remove an ATM machine from a service station on the Newcastle Road area of Seaforde. Considerable damage was also caused to the building.
It is believed the digger involved had been stolen a short time earlier from a nearby quarry and then set on fire and destroyed in the incident. A trailer was also stolen from the quarry.
Police have been carrying out a number of follow up enquiries to date and three men, aged 28, 30 and 32, have been arrested in connection with the incident. They have since been released on bail pending further enquiries.
A  blue Ford transit van that is believed to have been involved in the incident was also recovered by police in the Ballystockart Road area of Combera short time later, as was the ATM machine.
Police have also recovered the stolen trailer during follow up searches in the Greystown Road area of Downpatrick. Appealing for information, a police spokesperson said: “Detectives are continuing to follow a number of lines of enquiry in relation to this theft but we would appeal to the public to help us by coming forward with information.
“Anyone who witnessed the burglary at the service station or the theft of the digger in the Newcastle Road area or who has any information is asked to contact Detectives in Downpatrick on 0845 600 8000. Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111. ”
