South Down MP Margaret Ritchie has described the proposed withdrawal of the fracture unit at Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry to Craigavon as a ‘slap in the face’ for people in the area.
Ms Ritchie understands the plan will see the unit close in three weeks, which she says will cause considerable inconvenience for those who use it. She added:xa0“This latest plan for a cut in services will impact upon people in the entire southern section of Down and is merely another example of centralisation when, what should be happening is a decentralisation of services. Instead, services in our local health care sector are be stripped away.
“From what I understand the withdrawal of the fracture unit at Daisy Hill is planned to take effect in three weeks, but what consultation has taken place with patients and the wider community? I am totally opposed to this and believe it is a slap in the face for the people of the area.”
