He said:xa0“The announcement of a £1.2 million scheme to encourage more people to volunteer is positive news. The community and voluntary sector has been one of the greatest victims of the economic downturn with many organisations doing essential work being forced to close their doors as a result of financial pressures. “I would urge all community, voluntary and local sporting groups to apply for the DSD small grants programme. The grants, worth between £200-1500, can be used to increase the diversity of volunteers across Northern Ireland and to ensure those who give up their time to help others are rewarded with training and development opportunities. “The huge success of the recent World Police and Fire Games demonstrates the generosity of spirit of volunteers in the North and the depth of the contribution they make. This investment in volunteers will continue to develop the already strong culture of giving back in our generous community.
