SINN Féin Councillorxa0Éamonn Mac Con Midhe has said that those campaigning for the release of Martin Corey are only damaging the campaign by resorting to daubing graffiti on community facilities.

Councillor Mac Con Midhe said:xa0“Sinn Féin has called on several occasions for the release of Martin Corey and will continue to campaign for his immediate release from what is an illegal detention.

“However daubing graffiti on walls does not add to the campaign nor will it secure the release of Martin.xa0 I am calling on those involved in defacing these buildings to stop immediately. On three occasions over the last period areas across Downpatrick have been de-faced with this graffiti. Today there are two areas in Ballymote Estate, a building which represents everything good about community and the people of Downpatrick.”

Local Sinn Féin activist and candidate in the forthcoming elections, Naomi Baillie added:xa0“The attacks on several community facilities have only succeeded in undermining the commitment of local communities in working towards improving their area.

xa0“Basically this graffiti is making the area look untidy and uninviting to visitors, and ultimately its undoing the good work by local residents and councillors Mac Con Midhe and Johnston to bring in better resources and services to this part of town.

“Sinn Féin reiterates the call for the immediate release of Martin Corey but this will only be achieved through direct pressure on the British Government, not through defacing your own area.”
